Madden 09: Safety Ratings

June 18, 2008 8:42 pm - Author: Shanker Srinivasan

Madden 09: Safeties

It seems fitting that we close out the defensive ratings with the last line of defense, the safeties. With the last piece of the puzzle revealed, you should have a good idea of how your defense will fare in Madden 09.

Bob Sanders' contributions to the Indy defense have earned him top honors among the safety ranks. In fact, he and Bethea now represent the premier safety tandem in the league. Other noticeably stacked teams at this position include Arizona, Baltimore, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Minnesota, New England.

Unlike rookies at some of the other positions, rookie safeties are modestly rated. Maybe its a poor draft class for the position but, in the end, there will probably be just as many playmakers from this position as any other.

Next week we be covering kickers/punters and revisiting many of the offensive position with our new ratings. We were hoping to release of the full Madden playbooks shortly thereafter but it may be some time before its ready. Also be sure to stop by our forums and share your opinions on the safety ratings or leave us specific requests and we'll try to get the answers!

Oooo theyre all the safeties, i though only SS but thx!
Posted by: cowboyscowboys on June 18, 2008, 8:48 pm
John Lynch should be like an 87 overall with 82 spd,79agi,80acc etc. whatever it takes to get him to 87 overall I mean jeez 92 is really crazy.
Posted by: ShankDogg on June 18, 2008, 9:01 pm
Yeah I had to do them all because I'm gonna have to focus a bit on some other games. I figured the least I could do was finish off the defense.
Posted by: Teasley904 on June 18, 2008, 9:01 pm
Reggie Nelson 92 not bad. I dont think harrison should be 94 overall though just doesnt add up with his other stats oh well the rosters should be right after a couple of weeks when the updates are released
Posted by: goodwinb51 on June 18, 2008, 9:01 pm
You would think that roy williams would get like a 90 to 95 rating with the season he had last year.
Posted by: -mooby- on June 18, 2008, 9:02 pm
I think Landry should've been listed as a free safety since that's where he'll probably be playing this season.

I also wish we could unlock Sean Taylor as a player, god I miss him. That combo with him and Landry would've been beast.
Posted by: goodwinb51 on June 18, 2008, 9:04 pm
Roy Williams has 92 tackles 5 pass deflections and 2 interceptions
Posted by: Fort on June 18, 2008, 9:20 pm
Ndukwe needs more love! Dude is an absolute beast.
Posted by: jdoutlaw34 on June 18, 2008, 9:24 pm
A little too high when online update comes out i hope they lower the overalls just a little
Posted by: paintballerJC on June 18, 2008, 9:58 pm
Ed reed not 99 i know its only 1 point but dude it shoulda been a near perfect rating
Posted by: teddyghrams52 on June 18, 2008, 10:19 pm
Is it me or does not anyone else see that EA gave Ed Reed the second worse tackling stat for safeties. And if you wanna include rookies , he's tied for 4th. Hes not even close to being over the hill and thats what a former defensive player of the year gets ? i no I no 98ovr but my gosh. Thats like saying Tome Brady has no accuracy. And thats with these players having steroid stats.
ps: I'm not even a ravens fan , i just appreciate great defensive players.
Posted by: cowboyscowboys on June 18, 2008, 10:40 pm
Adrian Wilson only has 72 Str he should str8 up have 80 or 82 he is a freak of nature. I feel weird knowing Roy Williams has 80 and Wilson only has 72.
Posted by: Deeez_Nuts on June 18, 2008, 11:04 pm
Tyrell Johnson will be a beast in three years
Posted by: PMitch23 on June 18, 2008, 11:11 pm
I'm not gonna gripe and complain like so many, but I do think EA didn't look so much at Chris Harris' season in Carolina. He should in my opinion be at least 88-89. But, that's why we're video gamers and they make the games. Where's that TommyTrojan guy with his usual "this person is wrong. it should be..." stuff? it's actually pretty decent.
Posted by: Tommy_Trojan25 on June 18, 2008, 11:16 pm
Beautiful!!!! Gibril at strong SS and Huff at FS with realistic ratings. Huff's MCV should be the highest in the game and his speed should be 95+ (as should LaRon Landry's and Bob Sanders'). But relative to the other safety ratings, he wasn't screwed that bad. Gibril looks about right, although his TAK rating should be in the high 80s. I can live with it. 87 seems low but at least thy're both in the high 80s and at their correct spots.
Posted by: PMitch23 on June 18, 2008, 11:16 pm
This also affirms my fear that Minn. D and Oakland's D will be scary good online!
Posted by: Tommy_Trojan25 on June 18, 2008, 11:18 pm
I actually agree with you about Harris. His coverage skills should be much better. But, hey, at least he's a beast in run support.
Posted by: Rolo187 on June 18, 2008, 11:19 pm
Hell yeah thanks
Posted by: Tommy_Trojan25 on June 18, 2008, 11:54 pm
Fort is right. I expected an 83-86 for Ndukwe. Because, frankly, HE'S AN ABSOLUTE BEAST!
Posted by: krnx2oh7 on June 19, 2008, 12:08 am
Dear god bob sanders has THE highest rating in every category except for agility...what a beast
Posted by: 52Ray_Lewis on June 19, 2008, 12:23 am
What???
How does Sanders have a better zone coverage than reed??? Ed reed is the best zone coverage player in the league and as for his play recognition???
It should be 95+. He reads everything pefectly and i know he cant tackle like Sanders but come on a 65. Thats wack. Also Reed should have the hit power weapon. he laid out Steve Smith couples years back and nailed TJ last year. Dissapointed EA.
Posted by: giantcowboy on June 19, 2008, 1:51 am
Can everyone stop saying beast please gosh!!!!!! All i know is that Indy's duo is very scary. I really dont expect anything to get over the top if you play them. Curl routes here i come.
Posted by: chuckwaters1 on June 19, 2008, 4:01 am
Muaahhhhhhh Colts all day!!
Posted by: jmitch100940 on June 19, 2008, 4:29 am
Roy williams is good at where he is at until he can prove he can cover people better thats the man and zone coverage is what kills his rating
Posted by: Newlopw on June 19, 2008, 5:10 am
Why is Carolina's Chris Harris only a 85. The guy had 96 tackles and forced 8 Fumbles. I expected the guy to be at least an 88 OVR
Posted by: kortneyd52 on June 19, 2008, 5:18 am
Y aint sean jones rating higher
Posted by: teddyghrams52 on June 19, 2008, 6:17 am
52RAy Lewis I agree with everything you said except the hitting power . Can he hit? yes at times but not enough to make him an elite power hitter like a sanders / bdawk .
Posted by: tha_king123 on June 19, 2008, 6:17 am
RIP SEAN TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: BigBoi17 on June 19, 2008, 7:53 am
Ed Reed's tackling should be in the 80's. Adrian Wilson's strenth should be in the 80's and his tackling should be in the 90's, how many 100 tackle seasons did he have?...But those are the only complaints I have. Madden did a excellent job on the safety ratings. I told the Falcons to get Tyrell...Dumbasses P.S. Change John Lynch's name to Mr. Stark cause that muthafucka is Iron Man lol
Posted by: raider4lfe87 on June 19, 2008, 9:16 am
That's what talking about;
CB's- N.Asmougha: OVR 96
D.Hall: OVR 93
SS- G.Wilson: OVR 87
FS- M.Huff: OVR 87

GOOOOOO RAIDERRRRRRRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: BigBadDice_22 on June 19, 2008, 9:21 am
Im actually glad Anthony Smith is so low, maybe his ego will lower just a little bit.
Posted by: cj112 on June 19, 2008, 9:39 am

How about all those beeaaasttt man. they are going to beast it up. have a beastful day.
Posted by: 54Bruschi54 on June 19, 2008, 10:07 am
Yeah. sanders and meriweather should both help out the secondary. meriweather didnt do much in 07 so i dont know how he could possibly be higher in rating (82 in madden 08). he's a rising product. i can tell.
Posted by: EazyDuzzit on June 19, 2008, 10:11 am
Where's the catch rating? and im glad reggie nelson's rated like he was, he had a great rookie year. where's reggie smith as a rookie and attention UNFL owners...i have the best safety set in madden and real life

Posted by: ajdick on June 19, 2008, 11:29 am
How the hell is ed reed a 65 at tackling, he's rated a 98 but has the worst tackling ability out of the top 40 list. ea is messing up
Posted by: buff24 on June 19, 2008, 12:01 pm
Wow watch out for my raiders..raiders by far gonna be the best teamn in madden 09 ..ed reed should be 99 overall..worst tackling come on now EA...i think they soft him up cuz reed got buck by hines ward and harrison from the steelers..check out on youtube
Posted by: GrandKing28 on June 19, 2008, 12:20 pm
Hey i wanted to no this year in madden are we going to be able to change position of players in the game like say i draft a SS and i want him to be a FS in the league or turn a Corner into a Safety can we actually do that now??
Posted by: SamGriebs on June 19, 2008, 12:30 pm
@ Rambo, Sanders is not overrated and your stats to back up your claim are false, if you have to lie to try and prove a point than that speaks for itself. Most of sanders int's and ff's come in the postseason, infact he had 1 of each in the superbowl. Sooo stop talking, you dont make any sense, if he stays healthy he will be the best safety to EVER play the game
Posted by: raidurNation82 on June 19, 2008, 12:34 pm
Bob Sanders has only played 2 full seasons and they threw away from him last year! Plus he's a SUPER strong safety, meaning he's more like a floating linebacker so he doesn't need picks to justify he play on the field! Just like P-Willy, where ever the ball is, #21 is there also. Far from overrated!

If anyone is overrated, it's Antrel Rolle! He hasn't played a single down as FS but he's an 89 just b/c they moved him there?? WHAT??

Huff/Wilson, please stay healthy!!
Posted by: Hines_Ward on June 19, 2008, 12:34 pm
's clear that they raised Bob Sanders individual attributes, undeservingly, in order to make him an undeserved 99 overall.

Sanders: SPD/ACC both need to be dropped 3 points or so each. STR needs to be dropped a good 17 points. His TAK needs to be dropped about 12 points. His AGI should be like 4 points lower, BSH should be about 15 lower. PRC should be much lower(like 86). He has about 10 Career PDs and 4 Career Ints. His ZCV should be about an 80 and his MCV should be about a 70

Reed: ACC should be raised by about 5. STR should raised about 7 points. Reeds TAK should be about a 84. PRC should be about 94. ZCV should be a 97 and MCV should be like a 65.

Polamalu: TAK should be like a 80. BSH should be like an 86. Pursuit shoud be like a 98. PRC should be like a 92. POW should be much lower and MCV should be like an 82 while ZCV should be the same.

Wilson: Should have highest STR of all Safeties. PRC should be like a 92. Pow should be the highest amongst all Safeties, ZCV should be like a 88 and MCV should be like a 78.

Rhodes: SPD and ACC both need to be about 4 points higher. AGI should be like a 96, PRC should be like a 98, MCV should be like an 87 and ZCV should be like an 87.

Getting lazy from here on down...

Bethea: Should have like 97 ZCV and 60 MCV.
Dawkins: ZCV should be a 92, MCV should be an 80.

Long story short... these guys are idiots.
Posted by: Hines_Ward on June 19, 2008, 12:50 pm
LMAO at someone saying Sanders wasn't thrown at. Since we're going to make things up... Wilie Parker broke 360 tackles.
Posted by: -904-Falconfish on June 19, 2008, 12:55 pm
Grandking28 brings up an excellent question! " Hey i wanted to no this year in madden are we going to be able to change position of players in the game like say i draft a SS and i want him to be a FS in the league or turn a Corner into a Safety can we actually do that now??" OMG where has this been EA?!?! Look at jags, they just moved brian williams to SS... we should be able to to that!
Posted by: ThizzUbz on June 19, 2008, 1:03 pm
Raiders all day the D is one of the best it been in a long time don't sleep on them in 09 or in real life cuz we R going 2 the SB at least in Madden 09 lol!!!!!
Posted by: ThizzUbz on June 19, 2008, 1:10 pm
A.Rolle a 89 ovr WHAT THE ????? over Huff and Wilson ??? LAME he play corner right then swich 2 fs this year wow a EA D MAC is a rb/qb/wr can you make him 90 ovr ??????
Posted by: cowboys30 on June 19, 2008, 2:18 pm
Ok i liked sean taylor as a player, but we shouldnt be able to play with him in the game. We dont play with anyone else that isnt in the league so why should we get to play with him?

And for all the raiders out there, they will not be super bowl continders sorry to let you in on that fact. The chargers will win the division and i see either the browns, titans, or jaguars will be winning the two wild card spots.
Posted by: CowboysABeast on June 19, 2008, 2:23 pm

Posted by: SonOfWashington on June 19, 2008, 3:04 pm
Sean Taylor was one of the only players to receive 99 Hit Power. =(
Posted by: texanfan90 on June 19, 2008, 3:23 pm
Come on madden c.c brown isnt great but he should be a 83 at least!!!
Posted by: champofchamps on June 19, 2008, 7:18 pm
Ok I am not big into complaining but I am an avid packers fan and yah I know atari Bigby played bad with hefty penalties early on but he was the defensive player of november and december plus he had 87 takles 13 broken up passes 5 interceptions 4 forced fumbles and three recoveries. now I just feel that he should have atleast 90 speed and 88 takling his Hit Power is fine and atleast 90 overall cuz late in the season he was the difference maker on our defense nick collins is fine and also I am not a big chargers fan but I watched eric weddle decimate teams atleast 86 for him he is the best safety they have
Posted by: teddyghrams52 on June 19, 2008, 10:38 pm
Its One Overall But Bob Sanders Isn't Better Then Ed Reed End Of Story !
Posted by: giantcowboy on June 20, 2008, 2:08 am
The only reason why ed reed is lower than bob sanders is because of his tackling. Madden did him dirty on the tackling. He wouldnt be able to tackle a punter lol omg why does everyone say beast????? so fucking stupid
Posted by: BigBoi17 on June 20, 2008, 7:25 am
TeddyGhrams brought up a good point...Now I like Bob Sanders, he's a top 3 saftey and he's my height(represent for the shorties). But Bob is not better that Ed Reed. Ed Reed stays consistant and is officially the best player on the Ravens D which says a lot(Well kinda cause Ravens kinda old on D). But Ed is a proven Saftey in this league and ppl already talking about him being in the HOF. He's a Ball Hawk that can tackle a lot better than what EA is giving him credit for, but if they brought it up to what it should be(which I think is in the 80's), Than he would be a 99 with Bob lol...
Posted by: Ronal1982 on June 20, 2008, 8:05 am
Looking at the rookie ratings DuJuan Morgan got a 70 overall? Not that he would of been a starter of Pollard and Page anways, but he was considered a top 3 Safety, and hes 11th in Madden Land?
Posted by: TonyBlush on June 21, 2008, 9:49 am
Ok, Yea Bob Sanders looks extra raw on paper and on his attributes, but really online, he's only gonna be effective in the run game, cause if u think about it, hes only 5'8.. He's not gonna be much of a challenge throwing at, especially when im playing with my Jaguars Baby!! Overall i do like these ratings, Roy Williams is correct since he had his worst year bacially, cant cover for nothing, but Ed Reed's tackling should be higher..
Posted by: Pennington247 on June 21, 2008, 9:10 pm
Its great to know how each player is rated before the game is rated.
Posted by: kortneyd52 on June 22, 2008, 5:13 pm
Ed reed"s tackle rating should at least be like 80
Posted by: -904-Falconfish on June 23, 2008, 3:16 pm
Jags are going to be BEAST this year!!! GO JAGUARS!!! GO JAGUARS!!! GO JAGUARS!!!

Cowboys30, think about what you said for a minute. You said something along the lines of, there ain't no players in the game that aren't in the league anymore, so why should he be?

It's my understanding that Brett Favre is no longer in the NFL, and yet the people who made Madden have decided he can be unlocked in the game because he's just so awesome players shouldn't be deprived of his awesomeness.

I'm not saying they should put him on the roster. But I think it would be nice if they made him as an unlockable player, for those of us who would still love to be able to use him as a player even though he's gone. And if that meant putting Darrent Williams, or Damien Nash in the game for those players that wanted to use both of those guys, then that's fine and dandy as well.

I'm just saying it'd be a nice thing to do, that's all.
Posted by: StillersPete on June 24, 2008, 7:06 am
They all ready have him as a "wild card" player thats what ea said
Posted by: jwzy13 on June 26, 2008, 7:55 am
Caleb campbell of the lions is listed as a safety on the ratings but the lions website has him listed as a LB on their roster.
Posted by: jwzy13 on June 26, 2008, 7:56 am
Rodney harrison is so overrrated. he is a has been saftey who tries to intimidate people but cant, plus he plays dirty
Posted by: Irish-Legend on June 27, 2008, 1:15 pm
Roy Williams 88????????????!!!!! what the heck is up with that? he should be in top 10 in my opinion.
Posted by: king_merk on June 29, 2008, 8:47 pm
Yea ed reed definately got stiffed, why does he have some of the worse tackling stats in the game? a 65 for tackling? thats insulting! landry is in the 80s for god sakes. you need to fix that because if hes going to be a 98, u need to fix his tackling to what it sjhould be. bob sanders is overrated but whatever.
Posted by: sf49ers2180 on June 30, 2008, 9:06 pm
Ed reed is overrated, he has been injured and has blown a many coverage assignments, 95 would be a better overall rating
Posted by: sf49ers2180 on June 30, 2008, 9:16 pm
I agree that rodney harrison is overated, a few years ago WRs and QBs actually feared him, but hes now old and intimidation doesnt work against those who have already faced it. Michael Lewis of the 49ers was under rated in 08, but im very happy that ea pulled its head out of its ass and gave him a better rating
Posted by: polamalu043 on July 1, 2008, 11:16 am
Troy polamalu is rawwww boiii best safety in the league hands down!!!
Posted by: xraidernationx on July 2, 2008, 1:47 pm
Wtf ea antrel rolle is rated better than huff and a superbowl champion (gibril wilson)...rolle hasnt even played at safety yet

SF49ers2180, u dont know what ur talking about first off just because ur injured a season does not make u garbage, second he still didnt blow any assignments. vernon davis still hasnt produced like he should do to injury, so one can make the argument he is overrated then huh?

Posted by: ravensdefence1 on July 11, 2008, 4:28 pm
Oh ya the ravens are stacked at safety by the time the new rosters come in tom zbikowski will be starting and we will have 2 starting safeties with 90+ speed, and a sub with 90+ man we will be a fast defence next year, and cover alot of grounds. but dawan landry is still good tho how are my gonna work it out, okay got it when i play agianst a good passing team i'll play tom, against a good running team i'll play dawan yes great play. cant wait for 09. but RIP SEAN TAYLOR, IF HE WAS HERE THE REDSKINS BY FAR THE BEST SAFETY TANDEM.

There is no way that a 2nd rounder Tyrell is the same as Kenny! Reggie Nelson is a beast!

Why is ed reed a FS hes a SS
Posted by: sf49ers2180 on July 15, 2008, 4:49 pm
I hope ea amps up the ai especially for the speed rating, on all pro i can have a WR with 95 spd and acc against a CB and S with 88 speed and still cant complete a pass
Posted by: BlaqOptic on July 15, 2008, 7:30 pm
Ed Reed is a Free Safety guy. Dawan Landry is the SS.

Ken hamlin is way higher than a 90. hes a freakin pro bowler should be at the least a 94 if u compare him to other safeties last year.

Y is ed reed's tak only on 65 that's horse shit with his countless big hits u only give him a 65 come on ea....that's y he's not on 99 because ea shafted him out of his tak rating
Posted by: Dcooksey on July 28, 2008, 6:07 pm
Man the only reason bob sanders is a 99 was because he won defensive mvp. how does ed reed have 7 picks and that was a bad season for him, but bob sanders only got 22 for his career. bull ****. ed reed returns punts to so how does he only have 93 spd wit 92 acc. so your saying bob sanders is faster. lets not even talk about the tackling. cause thats not even cool ea. Man im going to sometimes use indianapolis but bob sanders is overrated. man i like bob sanders him and ed reed are the best but if it came down to best overall player ed reed all day. thats like saying barry sanders (no disrespect) is a more all around back than walter payton. just look at the stats to get the ratings dang. i hope next year madden ratings wont be trippin like this year.
